Walking Milwaukee:  Fresh Air, Fitness, Art and Architecture


Many Saint John’s On the Lake residents enthusiastically embrace a lifestyle of wellness and good health and welcome opportunities to promote their personal fitness.  If you’re in this group, a new initiative by Milwaukee Downtown is encouraging local residents to get to know their city better – by walking through it.

Adding at least 30 minutes of walking to your daily routine not only helps you avoid a sedentary lifestyle but improves your health in more ways than one. Experts say a brisk walk offers an impressive menu of benefits, including improving heart health, lowering blood sugar, reducing pain and boosting mental health.

A recent Mayo Clinic study revealed that more than half of Americans spend six or more hours sitting every day. Plus, 20 to 35 percent of people spend four hours or more watching TV each day. All this non-movement for hours at a time has been linked to health issues like diabetes, cognitive decline, physical disabilities, certain cancers, and even a shorter life expectancy.

Milwaukee Downtown reminds us “as the snow has melted, the warmer temperatures and sunshine means it’s time to bust out of hibernation and stretch your legs. Strolling about downtown in the early morning, mid-day or evening for fresh air is not only great exercise, but an awesome way to explore what Milwaukee has to offer.”

Saint John’s On The Lake residents and all Milwaukee citizens are invited to take the Westown Stroll, a 1.4 mile trek that begins Pere Marquette Park, facing south toward Benihana.   There’s plenty of public art at the edge of the park so be on the lookout for gems you won’t see anywhere else. Your stroll will take you past gorgeous architecture, monuments, murals, sculptures, museums and arts venues.  See the complete route here.

“Heart and Sol” mural by local artist Mauricio Ramirez is painted on the side of Community Advocates, Inc. on 6th Street. It is downtown’s largest mural to date.

The Milwaukee Downtown website suggests other, longer routes for walks that will provide even more exposure to all Milwaukee has to offer. Make the most of the pretty days to come with a healthy walking tour of the city.
