Symposium on Aging
Aging advocates, researchers, thought leaders, innovators, authors, poets, even actors and city planners, economists and community activists push the Institute on Aging at Saint John’s beyond traditional boundaries and change our understanding of what it means to grow older.
Since 2017, the Symposium has annually convened a roster of the finest minds to imagine a new paradigm for aging to undergird the values and practice of the Institute. What began as a pioneering effort, now serves to confront, challenge and excite an ever-widening circle of older adults, clergy, social service providers and caregivers with the promise and the peril of aging in the 21st Century.
Aged to Perfection (A2P)
Beginning in 2015 Aged to Perfection, a multi-award-winning undergraduate college course, has been imbedded on the Saint John’s campus. The course, developed by Rachelle Alioto, then Director of Education and Programming at the Center for Aging and Translational Research at UW-Milwaukee, was carefully designed, based on research and input from older adults, to encourage students to choose careers working with older adults by understanding successful aging and experiencing it firsthand. We anticipate the continuation of the class with a new community partner.
On The Table MKE
The Institute has partnered with community organizations over the last two years to lead forthright conversations with a diverse group of Milwaukee County residents on the challenges of aging and what can be done to address them. On The Table MKE is an initiative of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation.
Timeslips – Meaningful Engagement Reducing Isolation
Beginning in February 2021, this project led by Anne Basting with project partners the Institute on Aging, the Greater Milwaukee Foundation and the Milwaukee Department of Health and Human Services Division on Aging is designed to decrease loneliness among up to 7,000 older adults in Milwaukee County. The Institute provided a grant as well as recruited volunteers to write or call older adults using a creative engagement process for human connection.
